Every Friday in 2013, the Let’s Fly Away Across the USA series will feature a different state, documenting the things we love about each sate and what you should do or see when you visit.
Hello! I’m Jen, a freelance writer and photographer from NYC. I blog about my adventures at That Long Yellow Line. Though I live in New York, I feel a special connection to Colorado, since I spend quite a bit of time there visiting my best friends. I first went to Colorado two years ago, and as the home of my BFFs, it certainly holds a special place in my heart.
I love the relaxed vibe of Colorado. Coming from New York, it is refreshing to visit a place where people can take their time and enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds them. I would say that Denver is like a second home to me, and I love the amazing art installations around the city.
1. Mt. Evans. A trip to the top of Mt. Evans is an absolute must if the weather permits. Mt. Evans is the highest paved road in North America, and it was certainly a crazy ride up as we navigated the twisting roads up the mountain in my friend’s truck. But the views at the top were spectacular and any anxiety was quickly forgotten. Make sure you account for the change in temperature. Though Denver was quite warm when we visited, it was snowing at the top of the mountain.
2. Garden of the Gods. For more glorious Colorado scenery, pay a visit to Garden of the Gods, a public park and national landmark in Colorado Springs. The incredible red rock formations were created millions of years ago and there is archaeological evidence of human visitors dating back to around 1330 BC. The park features trails for hiking and biking, as well as guided tours and field trip programs.
3. I Heart Denver. I Heart Denver is an amazing store that features the work of local artists and designers. Besides the amazing artwork, jewelry, clothing, and other gorgeous handmade items offered for sale, this store is also the hangout of Denver Picard, an adorable corgi and star of quite a few of the store’s wares.
For bonus points
Mermaids Bakery is right across the street from my friend’s apartment, so I visit it quite often when I am in town. These are definitely some of the best cupcakes I’ve ever had, plus they offer quite a few gluten-free options.
I visit a lot of bookstores when I travel, but Tattered Cover is one of my all-time favorites.
