As I’ve been organizing my Pinterest boards, I’ve been adding descriptions of what I actually like about each pin so it’s easier to see trends (plus, I figure if I can’t say what I like about it, I can probably delete that pin!). I’ve been going through my At Home board (and splitting off the work spaces into the Working Girl board), and I’m noticing a trend that I think really defines my style — I like things to be mixed, not matched. Give me a variety of colors, patterns, and textures, and throw in some metallic accents for good measure, and I’m a happy girl! I think this mix makes a room look more cozy and lived in and really tells a story about the person who lives there. What do you think defines your style?

I’m an overstuffed couches and farmhouse dining tables kinda girl. My fiance is all about modernism and sleek angles. I’m pretty sure that, when we move in together (again), our house will be completely mixed, too! Can’t wait for those fights… I mean, those opportunities for compromise? haha
Love overstuffed couches and farmhouse dining tables. As much as I admire the modern, sleek look, I will just never be cool enough to pull that off! I would feel the need to mix in stuff to make it look less serious.
I’m with you, I love when things aren’t too matched. It gives the space more personality. I’m also a fan of neutral base colors like grey with pops of color. Similar to the top left photo! I think I may have that photo on my pinboard as well.
It’s funny, I’m drawn to gray sofas, but I have a red sofa I wouldn’t trade for anything — hands down, my favorite piece of furniture. I think I can still do the pops of color with it, I’ll just have to be a bit more selective about the colors I use.
I love a mix, but I stick to a limited color palette. I think it’s important to mix warm and cool tones, too. Not just colors. All grey appears icy, but if you add in some camel or warm leather or bronze, it keeps it interesting.
Great point! I think that’s why I’m particularly drawn to the photo from Little Green Notebook — it’s a really good mix of warm and cool tones.
I really need to straighten up my Pinterest boards. At one point, I had them in order, but I’ve added new boards and needing to delete others than I’m not adding to as much as I thought I would.
It’s not an easy task, but it’s worth it!
Oh I love this! I totally agree with making a space completely your own. Cozy and lived in with eclectic personality. Perfectly inspiring.
Thanks! I just wish it didn’t take so long to create that kind of look — I’m so impatient! I always want to decorate things now, but it really is best when you take your time and collect things that have meaning to you.
Yes, I’ve been doing that too. Really helps to at least write one little thing about what you like or the reason you pinned the picture. Even if it’s as simple as “lots of light.” I hate it when people just put a period or empty space in the comments area. It also hinders searching.
