I need a mental break this week, so I want to do something a little different for this week’s Blogkeeping. I want to hear about your favorite blogs!
When I ignore my Feedly for a while, I know it’s probably time to clear everything out and start fresh. Yes, everything! I unsubscribed from every single blog I was reading back in January after Alt, so apparently this is becoming a semi-annual thing for me. I know some of you are horrified by the idea of tossing out your carefully curated list of blogs in your feed reader, and I totally get that — it’s not for everyone. I personally get most of my content from Twitter anyway, so unsubscribing from everything in my Feedly isn’t a huge loss — I’ll probably still see links to those blogs occasionally.
I’ve noticed my blog reading (and usually my pinning habits by extension) comes and goes in waves, which is probably true of any hobby. I either want to read All The Blogs or none at all (see also: why I suddenly have about 5 new boards on my Pinterest when I haven’t pinned regularly in several months).
I also don’t think I actually want to read every single post from any one particular blog, which is maybe why I need to clear out my Feedly every so often. I think maybe after a while I start to take a blogger’s point of view for granted and need a break for a while to remember why I loved their posts so much to begin with. It’s kind of like reading a book that never ends. Not that the blogger is doing anything wrong — I’ll probably come back a month later and read all the posts I missed.
Anyway, I don’t really have a point to make other than to share my thoughts and open things up for discussion. I’m fascinated by our blog reading habits and would love to hear more about yours! What makes you want to add a blog to your feed reader? Do you get most of your content there, or from somewhere else? What makes you want to unsubscribe from a blog? Would you ever unsubscribe from everything in your feed reader? And, a selfish request: what blogs should I add to my reader?
