I just happened to catch the Giada in Paradise: Bora Bora special on the Food Network last weekend, and it was fascinating. Obviously the scenery is to die for, but there were a few other things I found interesting as well. For one, the hotel Giada stayed at, the Hotel Sofitel Bora Bora, was actually built by her grandfather. As a film producer, he preferred to film on location, but there wasn’t a place in Bora Bora that could accommodate a 200-person crew. So he built one!
But even more fascinating to me were the pareos. It’s a form of tie-dying, but way more fun than that — you lay various flowers, leaves, and other patterns on top of the fabric while it cures in the sunlight, leaving a gorgeous imprint. Then they are hung to dry in the palm trees while you sip some fresh coconut water (or a fruity cocktail — you’re on vacation, after all!). And then you wear it as a skirt, dress, or wrap to your next luau!
Happy weekend! Have a fruity cocktail and pretend you’re in Bora Bora for a minute, ok?

Love it! Sarah Jio’s new book The Bungalow is set in Bora Bora so it’s been on my mind lately! Good book too.
Gorgeous photos – I sooo want a tropical vacation now! It was so interesting to hear about the pareos, I had no idea they were dyed like that!
Beautiful. I wouldn’t mind making beautiful clothes while sipping a cocktail on the beach!
Pareos! What a great idea.
I’ve always wanted to stay in one of those huts built on the water. I don’t think I’d ever actually go inside with water so blue around, though.
So cool!!! I had no idea that’s how they would get those sun-bleached imprints on them. I would LOVE to go to Bora Bora some day.
Sigh… Can’t wait for FF! Love the idea!!!
Stop by sometime, I’d love to hear what you think!
