How to create an opt-in freebie

What an opt-in freebie is, what you should do before creating one, and how to create your opt-in freebie, from elembee.com

Jenna asked how to create an opt-in freebie. We recently discussed why you should have an email list and the dos and don’ts, so now let’s discuss how to create an opt-in freebie!

What is an opt-in freebie?

An opt-in freebie is something to entice people to sign up for your email list. It can take any form really — an ebook, auto-responder email series, video training.

Before you create your opt-in freebie

Many will tell you that creating an opt-in freebie should be your top priority for getting people to sign up for your list. I have to disagree. What’s the point in enticing people to sign up for your list if you don’t continue to offer value afterwards? Your opt-in freebie won’t do you any good if people unsubscribe after they’ve downloaded it.

That’s why I recommend focusing on a content plan for your email list first. Writing for your email list really isn’t any different than blogging. It takes time to develop your voice and understand what value you provide. Once you are consistently providing value, then you can create an opt-in freebie as a bonus for subscribing. In fact, you wouldn’t even know that I have an opt-in freebie unless you subscribe from my signup page. And it’s listed as a bonus, not the main reason you should subscribe.

How to create an opt-in freebie

1. Choose your goal.

Choose one goal you hope to accomplish with your opt-in freebie. Do you want to give readers a preview of what to expect from your list? Do you want to sell them on your services? Introduce them to one of your products?

2. Choose your format.

I’ve seen opt-in freebies in every kind of format, including simple ebooks, bundles, emails, videos, and printables. What format works best with your goal? If you’re selling an ebook, then you might create a free ebook from sections of the ebook you sell with a link to buy at the end. Or, it can be as simple as combining your best emails in one resource or expanding on one of your most popular ones. It doesn’t have to be complicated.

3. Set a launch date.

Just because it’s free doesn’t mean you can’t launch it like you would anything you’re selling. Set a date and tell everyone about it! My biggest week for signups was the week I released my freebie. People like deadlines and need a sense of urgency to sign up, otherwise it’s easy to bookmark and say you’ll sign up later. (Let’s be honest: do you ever actually revisit your bookmarks?)
