Any time anyone mentions Instagram, I will inevitably say, “OMG, you HAVE to follow Jessica Nabongo @thecatchmeifyoucan.” Jessica is on a journey to be the first black woman to travel to every U.N. member country in the world, and as of this writing, she’s at 162 out of 195, on track to complete her goal in fall 2019.

What I love most about following Jessica’s journey is that she treats every country as a true tourist, as each is worthy of being seen and appreciated for its own unique beauty and culture. She doesn’t comment on political or economic status except as it prevents her from spending more time in an area.

Why I believe this is important is because it allows us to see the world from a different perspective. So many of the countries she’s visiting are countries many of us only see through the lens of the media. For some countries, all we know is that they are war-torn and politically unstable. For others, we see them as third-world countries in need of aid.

What these narratives are missing is the beauty, culture, and history that these countries do have to offer. Who knew Uzbekistan and Afghanistan had such incredible tile work? I’ll admit that I didn’t, but I’m glad to be able to see it through Jessica’s lens.
